A 17-year-old Massachusetts resident has been charged with murdering his mother and younger brother, with investigators discovering he had used ChatGPT to explore fictional scenarios involving harm to his family.
Arjun Aravind, 17, faces two counts of murder along with additional charges following the deaths of his mother, Sudha Venkatesan, 45, and his 14-year-old brother, Siddharth Aravind, at their Acton, Massachusetts residence. Both victims were discovered deceased in the family home after authorities responded to a welfare check request.
According to Middlesex County District Attorney Marian Ryan, investigators uncovered concerning internet activity in which Aravind had utilized ChatGPT to generate fictional, Gothic-themed narratives that appeared to involve scenarios related to his family members. Ryan characterised these as "theoretical ideas or fantasy stories" about killing family members, though prosecutors have not disclosed the specific content of these searches.
The discovery came after Aravind's father initiated a welfare check when unable to contact his family. A tutor arriving for a scheduled appointment was also unable to enter the residence. Upon arrival, police located the younger brother on the first floor and the mother in the basement, both showing signs of trauma. The official causes of death remain pending medical examination findings.
Following the incident, authorities allege Aravind departed the home in his mother's 2014 Honda Accord. He was apprehended the following morning in nearby Wayland while inside the vehicle. During his court appearance, a not-guilty plea was entered on his behalf, and he was held without bail. The investigation remains ongoing.
