Inspector General of Police Priyantha Weerasooriya announced efforts to extradite 73 individuals subject to international Red Notices, while investigations continue into nearly 100 others suspected of organised crime and drug trafficking.

Sri Lanka Police are pursuing the extradition of 73 alleged criminals and drug traffickers currently based overseas who are the subject of Red Notices, according to Inspector General of Police Priyantha Weerasooriya. Speaking in Kandy on Saturday, the IGP disclosed that parallel investigations are also underway concerning approximately 100 additional individuals believed to be involved in organised crime and narcotics operations.

Weerasooriya stated that the country has received substantial international support in its campaign against organised crime and drug trafficking. According to the IGP, foreign countries and diplomatic missions have acknowledged the transparency and progress of these ongoing operations. He further noted that no external pressure or demands to halt the crackdown have been received, with authorities instead receiving requests to expand enforcement efforts.

The IGP acknowledged that individuals connected to criminal and drug trafficking networks through financial investment or other assistance have expressed concern about the operations. When addressing criticism from certain politicians, Weerasooriya emphasised that he remains undeterred and ready to confront any challenges. He stated he could move freely throughout the country without enhanced security arrangements, claiming his conduct has not harmed society. The IGP suggested that political figures who have misled the public now face difficulties engaging with communities.
