A businessman and four private bank officers have been further remanded until September 3 in connection with investigations into the alleged illegal transfer of over USD 1 billion out of Sri Lanka.

The Colombo Chief Magistrate Asanga S. Bodaragama has extended the remand of a businessman and four private bank officials as investigations continue into a major financial crime case. The suspects are accused of illegally transferring more than USD 1 billion out of the country under the pretence of importing goods.

During the court proceedings, the Colombo Chief Magistrate considered submissions from the Police Financial Crimes Investigation Division (FCID) as well as representations from the suspects' legal counsel before ordering the extended remand period until September 3. The court rejected bail applications that had been filed on behalf of the four bank officials involved in the case.

The investigation focuses on allegations that the suspects participated in illegally channelling funds overseas while providing assistance and support to facilitate the transactions. The Police Financial Crimes Investigation Division is leading the inquiry into the matter, examining how the substantial sum was transferred and the roles played by each of the accused individuals.
