The World Cricketers' Association has welcomed the establishment of the Sri Lankan Professional Cricketers' Association, marking a significant step toward unified player representation in Sri Lankan cricket.
The World Cricketers' Association (WCA) has expressed support for the newly formed Sri Lankan Professional Cricketers' Association (SLPCA), characterizing the development as an important milestone for player advocacy in the country. The SLPCA was recently established by the nation's professional cricketers, with men's white-ball captain Kusal Mendis appointed as its first president.
WCA Chief Executive Tom Moffat commended Sri Lankan players for taking this step, emphasizing that professional sports globally benefit when athletes have meaningful participation in decision-making processes. Moffat stated that the collective action by Sri Lankan cricketers reflects their commitment to strengthening the sport's integrity and professional standards. He noted that Sri Lanka's position as a historically significant cricket nation made this development particularly noteworthy.
The formation of the SLPCA follows similar developments elsewhere, including the recent establishment of a players' association in the United States. According to the WCA, this expansion means that players from 17 of the world's top 19 cricket-playing nations now have affiliated representation through the global body. The WCA's Global Player Rights Program currently includes more than 750 international players across its member associations.
