The Department of Meteorology has issued a weather alert for multiple provinces across Sri Lanka on August 10, warning of showers, thunderstorms, and strong winds that could reach dangerous speeds in coastal areas.

Residents across Sri Lanka are being advised to prepare for unsettled weather conditions affecting several regions on August 10. According to the Department of Meteorology, showers and thundershowers are expected to occur throughout the day in the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces, as well as in the Kandy, Nuwara-Eliya, Galle, and Matara districts. Additional rainfall is anticipated in the northwestern province and parts of the Uva province, with activity intensifying in the eastern districts of Ampara, Batticaloa, and Mullaitivu after 2 p.m.

Strong winds pose a significant concern across much of the country. Wind speeds of 30 to 40 kilometers per hour are forecast over the North-central, North-western, Central, and Southern provinces, along with Trincomalee District. Authorities have cautioned the public to take precautions against potential damage from temporary strong winds and lightning strikes that may accompany thunderstorms.

Maritime conditions are expected to deteriorate substantially, particularly in southern coastal waters. The Department of Meteorology indicates that sea areas extending from Matara to Pottuvil via Hambantota will experience rough to very rough conditions, with wind speeds potentially exceeding 60 kilometers per hour. Wave heights may reach 2.5 to 3 meters in waters extending from Puttalam to Pottuvil. The naval and fishing communities have been advised to exercise vigilance or avoid these waters entirely until conditions improve.
