Jaffna Kings defeated Kandy Royals by 21 runs in a Lanka Premier League match held at the Pallekele on Thursday, consolidating their standing in the tournament. The victory propelled Jaffna Kings to the top of the points table with ten points as the league stage approaches its conclusion.
Batting first, Jaffna Kings accumulated 221 runs for the loss of six wickets across their 20 overs. Chamindu Wickremesinghe led the scoring with 43 runs, while Kamil Mishara contributed 49 and Avishka Fernando added 36 to the total. Middle-order contributions from Shakib Al Hasan, who remained unbeaten on 22, and Dunith Wellalage, unbeaten on 16, bolstered the innings. Kandy's bowling attack saw Wanidu Hasaranga and Moeen Ali each claiming two wickets, with Asitha Fernando and Zahir Khan taking one apiece.
In response, Kandy Royals managed 200 runs in their full 20 overs, falling short by 21 runs. Pawan Sandesh was their leading scorer with 48 runs, while Lahiru Igalagamage contributed 30. Contributions from lower-order batsmen Wanidu Hasaranga and Vijay Shankar, who each scored 24 and 25 respectively, proved insufficient. With one league match remaining, Jaffna Kings will look to consolidate their position at the top as the tournament moves toward its latter stages.
