The Sri Lankan government will require all traffic fines to be paid through online channels beginning in September as part of its wider digitalisation initiative.
Sri Lanka will transition to exclusively online payment systems for traffic fines starting in September, according to an announcement from the President's Media Division. The shift was discussed during a review of digital projects overseen by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake at the Presidential Secretariat, where officials assessed progress made by the Ministry of Digital Economy throughout 2026.
The online fine payment system will operate under the GovPay platform, a digital payment initiative designed to streamline interactions between citizens and government agencies. Officials framed the move as part of the government's broader effort to modernise public services and improve convenience for residents conducting official transactions.
The traffic fine digitalisation effort represents one component of several digital infrastructure projects currently in development. According to the President's Media Division, other initiatives under review include the rollout of Sri Lanka's first digital identity card by year-end, the National Super App, National QR Drive, and a National Data Exchange system, alongside plans for mobile number portability.
These projects collectively support the government's strategic objective to expand the digital economy to $30 billion by 2030. The comprehensive digitalisation programme reflects the administration's focus on integrating technology across public services and economic sectors.
