The government plans to issue its first digital identity cards by December 2026 as part of its broader digital economy initiative, according to updates provided during a presidential briefing this week.
Sri Lanka is moving forward with plans to introduce a digital identity card system, with officials targeting completion by the end of 2026. The initiative was discussed during a meeting at the Presidential Secretariat on Wednesday, where Ministry of Digital Economy representatives provided President Anura Kumara Dissanayake with updates on the project's progress.
According to the President's Media Division, preparatory work for the digital ID programme is currently underway. The review focused on assessing the status of implementation and identifying next steps required to meet the year-end deadline for issuing the first cards.
The digital identity initiative forms part of the government's wider digital transformation agenda, which encompasses multiple projects designed to modernise Sri Lanka's digital infrastructure and services. Officials have emphasised that necessary groundwork is being completed to support the planned rollout.
