A Colombo court has ordered a 17-year-old school cricketer to remain in probation custody until August 24 following an alleged assault at Bloomfield Cricket and Athletic Club that resulted in the death of a 62-year-old employee.
A Colombo Magistrate's Court has extended the probation custody of a 17-year-old cricketer arrested in connection with an incident at Bloomfield Cricket and Athletic Club that led to the death of club employee Sumith Fernando, 62. The custody extension was ordered during proceedings on August 17, with investigations continuing until August 24.
According to police accounts presented to the court, the incident occurred on August 8 when a group of young cricketers in training visited a water tap at the Bloomfield grounds and discovered no water was available. This prompted an argument between the players and Fernando. Police investigations suggest that Fernando initially attempted to assault one of the players before targeting the 17-year-old, who allegedly struck the employee in response. Fernando was subsequently admitted to Colombo National Hospital, where he died while undergoing treatment.
Authorities are investigating the exact cause of death, with uncertainty surrounding whether the alleged assault directly caused Fernando's death or whether an underlying medical condition was responsible. Fernando had a documented history of heart disease. A post-mortem examination returned an open verdict, with tissue samples scheduled for further examination to clarify the circumstances.
During court proceedings, the teenager's legal representative disclosed that the youth had been assaulted by another juvenile while in detention at Makola facility and was receiving medical treatment at Ragama Hospital. The Magistrate expressed concerns regarding the accommodation arrangements for juveniles with different needs within probation facilities and directed probation officials to submit a detailed report on the incident.
