The Department of Prisons announced that the renovated Old Bogambara Prison facility is nearing completion and will begin admitting inmates shortly, while authorities also honored ten officers who died during recent prison unrest.
The Department of Prisons has indicated that the Old Bogambara Prison will be ready to receive inmates within approximately two weeks, following extensive renovation work at the facility. According to Prisons Spokesperson Senaka Pallathenna, approximately 90 percent of the restoration work has been completed, with ongoing preparations to deploy prison officers to the location.
The timeline for reopening comes as the prison system continues to recover from recent disturbances. In a separate development, authorities held a compensation ceremony at Prisons Headquarters to honor ten prison officers who died during duty in connection with the recent emergency situation at Negombo Prison. Each of the deceased officers' families will receive Rs. 2 million through the Agrahara insurance scheme, according to Pallathenna.
The reopening of Bogambara Prison represents an effort to expand the country's correctional capacity and normalize operations following the unrest that resulted in the loss of prison personnel.
