Authorities have appointed a committee to evaluate property damage at Mahara Prison following Saturday's inmate unrest that resulted in one death and eight injuries.
A committee has been established to assess the extent of damage sustained at Mahara Prison during disturbances that erupted among inmates on Saturday afternoon, according to Acting Commissioner General of Prisons Prasad Hemantha. The unrest resulted in significant destruction across multiple prison facilities, including the prison kitchen, the Chief Jailer's office, and the Rehabilitation Division, along with other infrastructure within the facility.
The assessment committee has been tasked with evaluating the full scope of damage and providing urgent recommendations for restoring the affected areas. In addition to this damage assessment body, a separate three-member committee has been commissioned to investigate the underlying circumstances that led to the incident. The Acting Commissioner General indicated that this investigative committee has already begun its work.
The violence during the Saturday incident claimed one inmate's life and resulted in injuries to eight others. The Department of Prisons has since confirmed that security measures both within the prison and in its surrounding areas have been fully reinstated following the disturbances.
