The Colombo stock market reversed a three-session winning streak, closing marginally down as foreign investors turned net sellers and retail interest remained modest.
The Colombo Stock Exchange concluded trading in the red, ending a three-session rally as investors displayed mixed sentiment throughout the session. The All Share Price Index declined 0.03 percent, shedding 6.29 points to finish at 21,616.88. However, performance diverged across indices, with the S&P SL20 index moving counter to the broader market, gaining 0.31 percent or 18.82 points to reach 6,084.54.
Market activity reflected the cautious investor mood, with 132 counters closing lower against 75 advancing shares. Total turnover reached approximately Rs. 1.9 billion across 45.5 million shares traded. Foreign investors exerted downward pressure, recording net outflows of Rs. 473.5 million during the session.
Among major movers, stocks including BREW, RICH, RIL, DOCK, and CDB contributed to the decline, while SAMP, DIAL, BUKI, COMB, and MELS provided gains. According to First Capital Securities, the market opened with volatile trading, though retail investors showed relatively stronger participation. High-net-worth investor engagement remained subdued during the day.
Sector-wise, food, beverage and tobacco dominated trading activity, accounting for 36 percent of daily turnover. Capital goods and banking sectors together contributed an additional 30 percent to overall market activity.
