Sri Lanka's Ministry of Defence reports that extended dry weather conditions have impacted more than 70,000 people across four districts, with water shortages forcing authorities to deploy emergency supply measures.
The Ministry of Defence has documented significant hardship resulting from prolonged dry weather affecting approximately 70,828 people from 22,759 families across several regions of Sri Lanka. Four districts have been identified as bearing the brunt of the adverse conditions: Ampara, Batticaloa, Monaragala, and Ratnapura.
Monaragala District has experienced the most severe impact, with the Ministry reporting that 33,023 individuals from 10,264 families in the district are struggling with the consequences of the dry spell. The extended period without adequate rainfall has created acute challenges for residents attempting to secure safe drinking water supplies.
In response to the crisis, government authorities have initiated emergency relief measures to address immediate water shortages. According to the Ministry, water distribution through bowsers has been arranged to supply 12,801 people currently facing severe drinking water scarcity. The deployment of water tankers represents an interim solution as authorities work to mitigate the impact of the ongoing dry weather conditions on affected communities.
