Police have arrested five suspects, including a woman, in relation to the fatal shooting of Mohamed Asmin Moideen, believed to be a relative of organized crime figure 'Kanjipani Imran'. Authorities suspect the killing was orchestrated by another criminal known as 'Kudu Anju', currently thought to be in France.
Law enforcement officials have apprehended five individuals in connection with a fatal shooting that occurred in Colombo's Maligawatta area on August 10. The victim, 54-year-old Mohamed Asmin Moideen, operated a hardware store in the neighborhood and was shot by two assailants who arrived on a motorcycle at approximately 1.20 p.m. Moideen was transported to Colombo National Hospital but died from his injuries.
The arrests were conducted on August 17 by officers from the Colombo North Divisional Criminal Investigation Unit following leads gathered during the murder investigation. Those detained include a 21-year-old man and 23-year-old woman from Colombo 15, as well as three additional suspects aged 19, 25, and 28 from Mattakkuliya, Dompe, and Mulleriyawa respectively. Investigators recovered drug paraphernalia from the suspects, with the younger pair found in possession of 25 grams and 840 milligrams of crystal methamphetamine, while the other three carried 12 grams and 380 milligrams of the same substance alongside a motorcycle suspected to have been used in the shooting.
Police believe the killing may be connected to organized crime disputes. According to authorities, the murder was likely orchestrated by 'Kudu Anju', a criminal figure believed to be residing in France. Investigators suspect the shooting may have been carried out as retaliation for the recent murder of one of 'Kudu Anju's' associates in the Ratmalana area. The victim is believed to be closely related to 'Kanjipani Imran', another known organized criminal figure.
