Authorities are conducting forensic inspections and a magisterial inquiry following an August 1 disturbance at Mahara Prison that resulted in one death, multiple injuries, and extensive property damage estimated at over Rs. 150 million.
Forensic officials commenced inspections on August 3 at Mahara Prison as part of an ongoing investigation into civil unrest that erupted at the facility on August 1. A magisterial inquiry into the incident was completed the previous day, with multiple authorities now coordinating separate investigations into the circumstances that led to the disturbance.
The Department of Prisons reported that 104 inmates were transferred to other facilities following the unrest. These transfers were distributed among seven prisons: Dumbara, Welikada, Boossa, Kalutara, Badulla, Batticaloa, and Polonnaruwa. The disturbance resulted in one inmate fatality and injuries to ten others, who remain hospitalized at Ragama Hospital receiving treatment.
Damage sustained during the incident was substantial, with inmates causing destruction to prison buildings and other property valued at more than Rs. 150 million. To facilitate repair and restoration work, the Department of Prisons announced a three-day suspension of inmate visits beginning August 3. The scope and duration of the suspension may be extended pending completion of repair assessments and ongoing security reviews.
