Sri Lanka's meteorological authorities have issued a Red Warning for strong winds and rough seas affecting the southern coast, with wind speeds expected to reach 70 kmph in the most affected areas.
The Department of Meteorology's Natural Hazards Early Warning Centre issued a Red Warning on August 2 at 8:00 p.m., with the alert remaining in effect until 8:00 p.m. on August 3. The warning covers multiple coastal regions around the island, with varying severity levels depending on location.
The most severe conditions are expected in sea areas stretching from Galle to Pottuvil via Hambantota, where waves are anticipated to become very rough at times and wind gusts could reach between 60 and 70 kilometres per hour. Naval and fishing communities operating in this zone have been instructed to avoid venturing into these waters until the warning is lifted.
Additional areas from Puttalam to Galle via Colombo are also expected to experience rough sea conditions, though with somewhat less intensity. Wind speeds in these regions are forecast to reach 50 to 60 kmph. The meteorological department has advised all maritime communities to remain alert and regularly check for updated weather advisories as conditions develop.
