The National Building Research Organisation has activated landslide early warnings across multiple districts in response to heavy rainfall conditions affecting the country.
The National Building Research Organisation (NBRO) has issued landslide early warnings for residents across four districts as heavy rainfall continues to impact Sri Lanka. The warnings, which took effect from 11:00 p.m. on 2 January, remain in place until 11:00 p.m. on 3 January.
The alerts have been divided into two threat levels. Level 1 warnings, categorised as "Remain Vigilant" alerts, have been issued for specific areas in Kegalle, Nuwara Eliya, and Ratnapura districts. In Kegalle, residents in Aranayaka and Dehiowita have been advised to exercise caution. Nuwara Eliya residents in Nuwara Eliya, Talawakelle, Kotmale East, and Kotmale West are under similar advisories, while those in Nivithigala and Ratnapura divisions of Ratnapura District have also been warned.
More serious Level 2 warnings, marked as "Stay alert" alerts, have been activated for areas including Pasbage Korale and Ganga Ihala Korale in Kandy District; Yatiyanthota in Kegalle District; and Ambagamuw and Norwood in Nuwara Eliya District. These higher-level warnings indicate an elevated risk requiring increased preparedness among residents in these regions.
The warnings reflect ongoing weather concerns across the island, with authorities urging affected communities to remain aware of potential landslide risks during the period of heavy rainfall.
