Four-time Formula 1 world champion Max Verstappen has signed a contract extension with Red Bull Racing that will keep him with the team until the end of 2030, ending speculation about a potential move to rival teams.
Max Verstappen has extended his commitment to Red Bull Racing by signing a new contract through 2030, effectively dismissing widespread speculation that the Dutch driver might seek opportunities elsewhere. The decision comes after the 28-year-old had previously been linked with potential moves to Mercedes and McLaren, particularly given that his existing deal contained clauses allowing him to depart at the end of the current 2025 season.
The timing of the announcement coincides with Verstappen's final home race before the Dutch Grand Prix is removed from the F1 calendar. Verstappen expressed satisfaction with his long association with the team, describing Red Bull as "like a second family" and highlighting the four world championships they have won together since he joined Toro Rosso in 2015. He also praised new team principal Laurent Mekies, who assumed leadership last July, and expressed confidence in the team's direction and vision for future success.
The announcement represents a significant development for Red Bull, which has faced a challenging start to the 2025 season under new engine regulations. Verstappen's best results so far have been two second-place finishes, a marked contrast to his dominant performance last season, where he nearly lost the championship to McLaren's Lando Norris. Despite his public frustration with the car's performance and his concerns about the new hybrid engine regulations, Verstappen has chosen to remain committed to the team's revival efforts.
However, the deal contains performance-based mechanisms allowing Verstappen to exit if standards decline, a standard provision in Formula 1 driver contracts. The contract renewal arrives despite the departure of Verstappen's longtime race engineer Gianpiero Lambiase, who recently signed an agreement to join McLaren by 2028. Red Bull team principal Mekies described retaining Verstappen as "fantastic news" and emphasized the unique partnership's importance to the team's future.
