Authorities have arrested a suspect accused of making false claims about an LTTE training camp in Kilinochchi. Investigations found no evidence supporting the allegation, revealing instead that the site was being used for agricultural cultivation and unauthorized construction on state land.
Public Security Minister Ananda Wijepala announced in Parliament that a man identified as Sangeeth Jayasekara from Boralesgamuwa has been arrested and remanded for 14 days following allegations that he discovered an LTTE training camp in Pallai, Kilinochchi. According to Wijepala, investigations into the claim found no credible evidence to support it.
Jayasekara has a history of fraudulent activity, the minister revealed. Authorities discovered that the suspect possessed two fake identity cards, had used seven different addresses, and was named in three separate criminal cases involving alleged fraud. Wijepala stated that Jayasekara had also falsely presented himself as a doctor and had previously worked as a consultant attached to ministerial staff. Officials are now investigating the circumstances of these appointments.
When authorities investigated the site mentioned in the media briefing, they determined it was actually a cultivation area rather than a militant training facility. Cabinet Spokesman Minister Nalinda Jayatissa provided additional context, explaining that the location in the Kannagipuram and Mukkanpam area of Kilinochchi was gazetted as a forest reserve in 1919. The real issue involves illegal occupation of state land, with approximately 20 acres cleared for aloe vera and vegetable cultivation, along with a three-storey building constructed for apparel manufacturing. Jayatissa noted that seven cases had been filed against an individual identified as Thyagarasa Kuladeepan regarding activities at the site, and that a court order for vacation issued in February had not been complied with.
Wijepala characterized the false claims as an attempt to deliberately mislead the public and create communal divisions. The government has firmly rejected the allegations as baseless and emphasized that no terrorist activity has been detected at the location.
