The Police Mounted Division in Pettah is preparing contingency plans to move its 18 horses to cooler regions if current high temperatures continue to rise, while implementing immediate cooling measures.
The Police Mounted Division has indicated it may relocate its horses to the hill country if Sri Lanka's current heat wave intensifies further. According to police statements, the division is prepared to transfer its animals to either Nuwara Eliya or Kandy, where cooler temperatures would provide relief from the prevailing heat conditions affecting Colombo.
Currently, all 18 horses attached to the Mounted Division remain in good health despite the elevated temperatures. To protect the animals from heat stress, police have introduced several protective measures at their Pettah base, including the installation of electric fans in stable facilities to enhance air circulation. Additionally, each horse is being bathed three times daily as part of the cooling regimen.
The Mounted Division plays a key role in police operations, providing support for ceremonial functions, crowd control, and various law enforcement activities. Officials have emphasized that the situation remains under continuous observation, with relocation decisions to depend on whether temperatures escalate beyond current levels. The proactive approach reflects concerns about animal welfare during periods of extreme heat.
