Renovation work on the heritage stone bridge along the Rambukkana–Mawanella road has entered its final phase, with completion targeted for November 2026. The project forms part of broader infrastructure development plans for the region.
Restoration efforts on the Kabellawatta old stone bridge, situated along the Rambukkana–Mawanella main road, have progressed to their concluding stage, the Ministry of Transport, Highways, and Urban Development confirmed. The initiative represents a key component of longer-term plans to upgrade the route into a dual carriageway corridor, which will eventually operate in tandem with the Central Expressway project.
Construction has proceeded efficiently by scheduling work during periods when railway operations were halted, enabling contractors to advance without disrupting train services. The restoration approach involved removing the original stone structure, with authorities intending to construct a heritage-replica bridge at an adjacent site to maintain the historical character of the landmark.
The undertaking involves coordinated efforts between three government entities: the Road Development Authority, Sri Lanka Railways Department, and the Department of Archaeology. Upon completion, the restored bridge will serve a dual purpose—permitting train traffic to traverse the top while allowing vehicles to pass beneath, thereby accommodating both transport modes within the same corridor.
According to the Ministry, the project is scheduled for completion by November 2026, pending no unforeseen complications during the final construction phases.
