Sri Lanka has reported over 84,000 dengue cases this year with 61 deaths, with July alone accounting for nearly 28,717 infections—the worst month of the outbreak so far.

The dengue outbreak across Sri Lanka has intensified significantly, with July emerging as the most severe month of the year. According to the National Dengue Control Unit, the island recorded 28,717 new infections during July, surpassing June's 21,533 cases. By July 29, the cumulative case count reached 84,091, with 61 deaths attributed to the disease since the beginning of the year.

The Western Province has borne the heaviest burden, accounting for over half of all reported infections with 44,552 cases representing 52.98 percent of the national total. Within the Western Province, Gampaha District leads with 17,850 cases (21.23 percent nationally), followed by Colombo with 16,716 cases (19.88 percent). The Southern Province has recorded 18,127 cases, while other significantly affected areas include Kandy, Matara, and Kalutara districts. Provincial breakdowns show the Sabaragamuwa, Central, North Western, North Central, and Northern provinces reporting lower but still concerning case numbers.

Health authorities have identified 175 high-risk Medical Officer of Health areas, with an average of 2,391 new cases being reported daily during week 29. The case fatality rate currently stands at 0.07 percent. Public health officials have emphasized the importance of community vigilance, urging residents to eliminate mosquito breeding sites and implement preventive measures as transmission continues across the country.
