Sri Lankan authorities have deployed over 9,000 personnel for the Kandy Esala Perahera festival beginning August 18, implementing comprehensive security measures and alternative traffic routes to manage expected crowds of local and international visitors.
The Kandy Esala Perahera, one of Sri Lanka's most significant cultural and religious celebrations, will commence tomorrow with an unprecedented security operation in place. Police Media Spokesman ASP F.U. Wootler announced that approximately 6,200 police officers, 564 Special Task Force personnel, 1,200 Tri-Forces members, and civil security officials will oversee the ten-day festival. The deployment aims to ensure the safety and comfort of the thousands of devotees and tourists expected to attend the historic pageant.
In preparation for increased traffic congestion, authorities have established a comprehensive traffic management strategy featuring 13 designated parking facilities across Kandy city. Light vehicles can utilize locations including the KMC Car Park, Railway Station Car Park, and facilities along Gannoruwa Road, while heavy vehicles are directed to bus stands at Torrington, Bogambara, and Clock Tower areas. Police have advised motorists to utilize alternative routes, with specific recommendations for travelers from different directions. Those heading from Katugastota towards Colombo or Nuwara Eliya are encouraged to use Gohagoda Road, while vehicles traveling through Kandy towards Kurunegala and Matale should use the Peradeniya-Gohagoda route.
Authorities have emphasized visitor cooperation and respectful conduct during the festival. Police have stationed officers at all parking locations to provide assistance and have established emergency contact procedures, including a dedicated hotline at 081 223 3333 and direct contact with Chief Inspector Rasika Sampath. Officials remain committed to balancing robust security measures with the facilitation of safe travel and enjoyment of this celebrated religious event.
