Police arrested a husband-and-wife team operating a beauty salon in Matara after discovering a large cache of heroin and crystal methamphetamine valued at approximately Rs. 70 million during a raid.
A married couple has been taken into custody following a drug seizure at their beauty salon on Matara Railway Station Road. The Matara Divisional Crime Investigation Bureau conducted the operation based on intelligence received by the Assistant Superintendent of Police and under the supervision of the Senior Superintendent of Police.
According to police records, the 30-year-old male suspect from Welegoda was found with 2.45 kilograms of heroin and 50 grams of crystal methamphetamine, while his 26-year-old wife possessed an additional 6 grams of heroin. The combined narcotics carry an estimated street value of Rs. 70 million. Officers also recovered Rs. 625,000 in cash believed to be proceeds from drug sales, along with electronic scales and mobile phones from the premises.
Preliminary investigations indicate the couple had engaged in drug trafficking operations for an extended period. According to police findings, heroin was being sold at approximately Rs. 25,000 per gram in their network. Authorities are continuing their inquiry to establish the source of the drugs and determine whether the suspects maintain connections to broader trafficking organizations.
The arrested pair are scheduled to appear before the Matara Magistrate's Court on August 28 to face charges related to the seizure.
