Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna MP Namal Rajapaksa has challenged the government to provide a concrete timeline for launching the Digital ID scheme, citing a pattern of missed deadlines spanning nearly two years.

Opposition lawmaker Namal Rajapaksa has publicly questioned the government's handling of Sri Lanka's Digital ID initiative, expressing frustration over what he characterizes as a cycle of unfulfilled commitments. According to Rajapaksa, successive implementation timelines have been announced over a nearly two-year period, including a target date in April 2026 that has already passed.

The SLPP MP noted that citizens are now being informed the first Digital ID would be issued by year-end 2026, and questioned how many additional missed deadlines the public should reasonably tolerate. Rajapaksa emphasized that meaningful digital transformation demands more than statements of intent from government officials.

In his criticism, Rajapaksa called for greater accountability and adherence to announced schedules, stating that successful implementation requires "delivery, accountability and timelines that are honoured." He has urged the government to provide clarity on when the Digital ID will actually become operational, signaling that the opposition is monitoring progress on this significant infrastructure project.
