The United Nations World Food Programme has distributed farming equipment to producers supplying the Home-Grown School Feeding programme in Nuwara Eliya District, as part of a broader initiative to strengthen local food systems and rural economies.

The World Food Programme has handed over agricultural equipment valued at approximately Rs. 22 million to farmers and school meal suppliers participating in the Home-Grown School Feeding initiative in Nuwara Eliya District. The distribution, carried out in partnership with the Ministry of Rural Development, Social Security and Community Empowerment, represents a concrete step toward enhancing local food production capacity in the region.

The equipment package includes water tanks, garden hoses, sprayers, storage crates and fencing materials designed to improve farming efficiency and productivity. By providing these tools, the initiative aims to support both the sustainability of Sri Lanka's National School Meal Programme and the economic wellbeing of rural communities, with particular emphasis on supporting women producers who form a significant portion of the participating farmers.

The programme operates by connecting schools directly with local food producers, creating a market for farm products while simultaneously ensuring students have access to nutritious meals sourced from nearby communities. According to the WFP, the organisation has invested more than Rs. 92 million overall to support the implementation and expansion of this scheme across Nuwara Eliya. The initiative receives funding support from Michael Kors through the World Food Programme, demonstrating private sector involvement in addressing food security and rural development objectives.
