The Sri Lanka Navy has deployed vessels to locate 17 containers that fell into the ocean west of Colombo Port. Authorities warn that the containers may drift toward the western and northwestern coastlines.
The Sri Lanka Navy has initiated a search and monitoring operation after 17 containers were lost at sea approximately 17 nautical miles west of the Colombo Port. Navy Spokesperson Commander Chaminda Walakuluge confirmed that naval vessels have been deployed to the affected area to track the containers, though no sightings or recoveries have been reported at this time.
The Department of Fisheries has assessed that ocean currents may carry the containers toward the coastline, with particular risk to the regions between Beruwala, Negombo, and Puttalam. In response, the department has issued an alert to fishing operations in these areas, instructing both multi-day and small-scale fishing vessels to remain vigilant and take precautionary measures while operating or transiting through the potentially affected zones.
Fishermen and maritime workers who encounter any of the floating containers have been asked to report their observations to the nearest Fisheries Department radio communication centre or to officials at their closest fisheries harbour. The coordinated response reflects efforts to both locate the containers and prevent potential hazards to fishing operations and coastal communities along the western coast.
