The government has planned 786 development projects worth Rs. 997.84 million for Nuwara Eliya District under the Praja Shakthi poverty eradication programme, with livelihood and infrastructure initiatives set to commence across the region.
A total of 786 development projects valued at Rs. 997.84 million have been approved for implementation in the Nuwara Eliya District as part of the government's Praja Shakthi national poverty eradication initiative. The project breakdown comprises 263 livelihood development initiatives allocated Rs. 296.19 million and 286 infrastructure development projects budgeted at Rs. 543.22 million. An additional Rs. 500,000 per unit has been set aside for technical equipment and facilities at District and Divisional Secretariat levels.
The announcement came during a progress review meeting held at the Nuwara Eliya District Secretariat on Friday (28 August), presided over by Rural Development, Social Security and Community Empowerment Minister Dr. Upali Pannila. The Praja Shakthi programme, allocated Rs. 25 billion in the 2026 Budget, aims to implement at least one development project in every Grama Niladhari Division nationwide.
Nationally, the programme has already initiated 15,646 projects worth Rs. 22.425 billion across the island, comprising 8,323 livelihood development schemes and 7,323 infrastructure projects. Minister Pannila instructed officials to accelerate project implementation while maintaining fiscal discipline and ensuring maximum community benefit.
