Police in Thanamalwila have arrested a 35-year-old local resident found carrying an unregistered firearm and over five grams of crystal methamphetamine during a raid.
Authorities in the Gangeyaya area of Thanamalwila arrested a 35-year-old man during a police operation on the 29th after discovering him in possession of a firearm and drugs. Officers from Thanamalwila Police Station seized approximately 5.37 grams of crystal methamphetamine, commonly known as 'Ice', along with the weapon during the raid.
The firearm recovered had no identifiable country of manufacture, according to police, and investigators have not yet determined the circumstances surrounding why the suspect was carrying the weapon. The arrested individual is a resident of the Gangeyaya area where the operation took place.
The arrest comes with additional complications in the suspect's legal history. Police indicated that the man is currently out on bail facing previous charges related to both a murder case and drug-related offences. He is scheduled to appear before the Wellawaya Magistrate's Court to address the current charges.
The Thanamalwila Police continue investigating the matter and are working to establish further details surrounding the arrest.
