The Nuwara Eliya District has been allocated Rs. 997.84 million for 786 development projects under the government's 'Praja Shakthi' national poverty eradication programme, which aims to implement at least one project in every administrative division across Sri Lanka.
The Rural Development Bureau and Praja Shakthi National Secretariat have launched an ambitious nationwide poverty eradication initiative under the Ministry of Rural Development, Social Security and Community Empowerment. The programme has secured Rs. 25 billion through the 2026 Budget, with plans to establish development projects across all Grama Niladhari divisions throughout the country. To date, approximately 15,646 rural development projects have been initiated nationwide, representing a combined financial commitment of Rs. 22.425 billion.
During a progress review held at the Nuwara Eliya District Secretariat, officials outlined plans for 786 projects in the district valued at Rs. 997.84 million. These initiatives are divided into two categories: 263 livelihood development projects allocated Rs. 296.19 million, and 286 infrastructure development projects receiving Rs. 543.22 million. Nationally, the programme distributes its focus with 53.2% of projects dedicated to livelihood development and 46.8% toward infrastructure improvements.
Minister of Rural Development, Social Security and Community Empowerment Dr. Upali Pannila chaired the review meeting and emphasized the need to accelerate project completion and timely handover to communities. He also highlighted the importance of implementing initiatives while maintaining strict financial discipline to ensure maximum public benefit. Additionally, Rs. 182.5 million has been allocated for 2026 to equip Praja Shakthi units at District and Divisional Secretariat levels, with each unit receiving Rs. 500,000 for technical equipment and facilities.
