More than 50 students at a Trincomalee school were admitted to hospital after wasps attacked them when a hive in a school building was disturbed.
A mass wasp attack at Divulwewa Maha Vidyalaya in Trincomalee left over 50 students requiring hospitalisation on Monday. According to police, the incident occurred after a wasp hive located within a school building was inadvertently disturbed, triggering an aggressive response from the insects. Students present on the school premises were subsequently attacked.
Following the attack, the injured students were initially transported to Mahadivulwewa Hospital for emergency medical treatment. However, three female students who were assessed as being in serious condition were transferred to Trincomalee General Hospital for more intensive care.
The incident underscores the risks posed by insect hives in institutional settings where large numbers of people, particularly children, gather regularly. School authorities have not yet issued statements regarding measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
