Sri Lanka's Attorney General has filed charges against former Eastern Province Chief Minister Sivanesathurai Chandrakanthan and three others in connection with the 2006 abduction and murder of Eastern University Vice Chancellor Professor Subramaniam Ravindranath.
The Attorney General has moved to prosecute four individuals before the Polonnaruwa High Court in relation to the death of Professor Subramaniam Ravindranath, who headed the Eastern University. The accused include Sivanesathurai Chandrakanthan, commonly referred to as Pillayan and formerly serving as Chief Minister of the Eastern Province, alongside Kathirgathambi Jeyakishan (also known as Jeyanthan), Nimal Devsukan (known as Jeyakandan), and Nadarasa Nagulendran (referred to as Simbu or Nagulan).
The indictment centres on charges of abduction and murder spanning the period from December 16 to December 18, 2006. Professor Ravindranath, who held the position of Vice Chancellor at the Eastern University during the time of the alleged incident, is believed to have been unlawfully taken and subsequently killed during this three-day period.
