Sri Lanka's Department of Meteorology has issued weather warnings for multiple provinces, alerting residents to prepare for potentially hazardous wind conditions expected to persist through early Thursday morning.
The Department of Meteorology has released weather advisories warning of dangerous wind patterns affecting several provinces across the island. Red alerts have been designated for 12 districts, while an additional 13 districts have been placed under amber alert status as part of the precautionary measure.
According to the meteorological advisory, the alert remains in effect until 11:30 am on August 7. The warnings cover the North-central, North-western, Sabaragamuwa, Central and Southern provinces, areas identified as most vulnerable to the anticipated weather system.
Met Department officials attribute the strong wind conditions to active south-west monsoonal patterns currently affecting the region. Meteorologists have forecast wind speeds reaching approximately 40-50 kilometres per hour at various times throughout the affected areas. Such wind velocities pose potential risks to infrastructure, agricultural operations, and public safety.
The tiered alert system—with red alerts indicating higher risk zones and amber alerts indicating moderate concern—allows authorities and residents in the affected regions to implement appropriate precautions. Residents in red alert areas are advised to exercise heightened caution and secure loose outdoor items that could be displaced by strong winds.
