Sri Lanka's Cabinet has endorsed a fresh National Action Plan to implement the UN's Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration over the next three years, building on the country's previous framework that expires this year.
The Cabinet of Ministers has approved a new National Action Plan covering 2026 to 2028 to advance Sri Lanka's implementation of the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration, according to NewsWire. The decision reflects the government's continued commitment to strengthening migration governance and safeguarding migrant rights across the country.
The Global Compact represents the first comprehensive intergovernmental framework on international migration, adopted by United Nations member states in 2018. It aims to facilitate migration that is safe, orderly and conducted through regular channels while promoting international cooperation on the issue. Sri Lanka endorsed the framework in 2018 and subsequently established a national coordination mechanism in 2021 to oversee its implementation.
The new plan was approved following the near-completion of Sri Lanka's initial National Action Plan, which covered 2022 to 2025. The proposal was presented to Cabinet by the Minister of Public Security, Parliamentary Affairs and Media. The updated action plan seeks to strengthen coordination among relevant institutions while prioritising safe migration pathways and protecting migrant welfare. Additionally, it aims to align domestic policies with international migration commitments and leverage effective migration governance to support sustainable development objectives.
