A 48-year-old man identified as a major drug trafficker has been brought back to Sri Lanka and placed under detention for interrogation following his arrest in Dubai.

Shiran Basik, a 48-year-old resident of Dehiwala, was arrested in Dubai and extradited to Sri Lanka on August 14. Police have issued a detention order against him as investigations into multiple serious allegations proceed. The suspect is accused of large-scale drug trafficking, firearm possession, and carrying dangerous weapons across several police jurisdictions including the Narcotics Bureau, Dehiwala, Mirihana, Kalutara, and Piliyandala divisions.

According to Sri Lanka Police, Basik is suspected of accumulating substantial illegal assets through drug trafficking and organized criminal activities. Investigators are currently working to identify and trace properties believed to have been acquired through unlawful means. The case is being handled under the direction of the Inspector General of Police, with the Colombo Central Crimes Investigation Bureau taking a lead role in the inquiry.

Police have indicated that investigations are also examining Basik's possible involvement in recent prison disturbances. Additionally, authorities are investigating potential connections between the suspect and the 2012 Welikada Prison riot. However, sources differ on the precise duration of the detention order, with one reporting a 72-hour period while another indicates a 72-day authorization, creating some ambiguity regarding the exact timeline for interrogation and follow-up proceedings.
