Authorities have announced comprehensive traffic and security measures for the upcoming Kandy Esala Perahera festival, beginning tomorrow with deployments across multiple agencies and designated parking zones.
Sri Lanka Police will commence a comprehensive traffic and security operation from tomorrow in preparation for the annual Kandy Esala Perahera, maintaining special arrangements throughout the festival season. According to Police Media Spokesman Assistant Superintendent of Police F.U. Wootler, the measures will encompass traffic control, security checkpoints, vehicle inspections, and tourist assistance.
The festivities will unfold in two phases: the Kumbal Perahera running from tomorrow through August 22, followed by the Randoli Perahera from August 23 to 27. To manage the anticipated crowds, authorities will deploy a combined force exceeding 8,000 personnel, comprising 6,200 police officers, 564 Special Task Force members, 1,200 military and tri-forces personnel, and 29 Civil Security Department staff. Canine units will supplement these security efforts.
To regulate vehicle access, police have established 14 roadblock entry points into Kandy city during the Perahera period. Transportation infrastructure has been augmented with 13 designated parking zones—six allocated for cars and seven for heavy vehicles. Additionally, authorities have mapped alternative routes for through-traffic to reduce congestion in central Kandy.
Motorists have been advised to utilize the alternative routes and comply with police traffic directives throughout the festival duration. The multifaceted operation reflects efforts to balance visitor access with security concerns during one of Sri Lanka's major cultural events.
