Sri Lankan police have secured a 90-day detention order for suspected major drug dealer Shiran Basick, who was extradited from the United Arab Emirates. Investigators are examining his alleged ownership of multiple hotels and potential connections to prison violence.

The Sri Lanka Police have obtained court approval to detain and interrogate Shiran Basick, a 48-year-old Dehiwala resident accused of large-scale drug trafficking, for a period of 90 days. Basick was arrested in the United Arab Emirates after fleeing the country and was deported back to Sri Lanka, arriving last Friday evening.

During questioning, Basick has indicated that he owns five hotels situated along Colombo's Marine Drive, according to police statements. The extended detention order came after an initial 72-hour questioning period conducted by officers from the Colombo Central Crime Investigation Bureau, during which preliminary investigations were conducted into his alleged criminal activities.

Beyond drug trafficking allegations, investigators are examining additional matters connected to Basick's time abroad. Police revealed that he received helicopter pilot training while residing in Dubai. Authorities are also investigating whether Basick had any involvement in recent violent incidents within Sri Lankan prisons and are specifically probing potential links to the 2012 Welikada Prison incident.

The 90-day detention window will allow police and investigating officers to pursue multiple lines of inquiry as they build their case against the suspect.
