The Bar Association of Sri Lanka has conducted its first bilateral meeting with the Bar Council of Bhutan in Thimphu, with both organizations committing to enhanced cooperation on judicial matters.

Sri Lanka's legal profession has taken a significant step toward regional engagement, with the Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) holding its inaugural bilateral meeting with the Bar Council of Bhutan. The meeting, held in Thimphu during a BASL delegation visit, resulted in a joint statement outlining shared commitments to strengthen cooperation between the two legal bodies.

Both organizations pledged to prioritize justice, the rule of law, professional integrity, and the independence of the judiciary and legal profession in their future collaboration. During the visit, BASL President Rajeev Amarasuriya addressed the High Court of Bhutan, where he focused on the importance of judicial independence and the working relationship between judges and practicing lawyers. Amarasuriya also identified several areas where the two nations could work together, including legal education reform, professional development initiatives, support for emerging lawyers, integration of technology in legal practice, and improvements to court administration systems.

The BASL delegation met with key figures in Bhutan's legal system during the visit, including Supreme Court Chief Justice Norbu Tshering and Attorney General Sonam Tashi. This engagement represents the first formal high-level exchange between Sri Lanka's and Bhutan's legal professions, establishing a foundation for ongoing dialogue and potential knowledge-sharing between the two countries' legal communities.
