Sri Lankan authorities have deployed thousands of security personnel and implemented comprehensive traffic management measures ahead of the 2026 Kandy Esala Perahera, one of the country's most significant cultural and religious festivals beginning this week.
The 2026 Kandy Esala Perahera festival will commence with the Kumbal Perahera processions starting on Tuesday, August 18, according to NewsFirst. The Kumbal Perahera is scheduled to run for five consecutive days through August 22, while the Randoli Perahera will follow from August 23 to August 27. The festival will conclude with the Day Perahera on August 28.
Anticipating significant crowds of both local devotees and international visitors, authorities have implemented a substantial security and traffic management framework. According to Kandy District Secretary Indika Udawatta, all necessary arrangements have been finalized, with the city prepared to accommodate the expected influx of spectators. The security operation will involve 6,200 police officers, 564 members of the Police Special Task Force, 1,200 members of the Tri-Forces, and 29 Civil Security Department personnel. Specially trained police canine units will also be deployed.
To manage traffic flow during the festival period, police have established roadblocks at 14 designated entry points into Kandy city. Additionally, 13 parking areas have been designated to handle vehicles, and alternative routes have been created to enable through-traffic to bypass the city and reduce congestion in the town centre. District authorities have also arranged necessary facilities for the anticipated large number of attendees.
The Kandy Esala Perahera represents one of Sri Lanka's most iconic religious and cultural celebrations, drawing sustained attention from both domestic and international observers annually.
