Low-cost airline Vietjet will begin direct flights between Colombo and Ho Chi Minh City on August 18, 2026, following recent international recognition for its cabin crew uniforms and affordable fares.
Vietjet is set to enter the Sri Lankan market with the introduction of a direct route connecting Colombo to Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam's principal commercial centre. The Vietnamese low-cost carrier will operate three round-trip services per week on this route, providing Sri Lankan travellers with connections to major destinations across Southeast Asia, Australia, China, Japan, and South Korea through its regional network.
The airline's arrival comes amid growing international recognition of its brand. Vietjet recently secured two awards at the 2026 Flyers' Choice Awards, organised by AirlineRatings and determined by approximately 40,000 verified passenger votes. The carrier won recognition as the "Favourite Low-Cost Carrier" and "Best Cabin Crew Uniform." According to AirlineRatings CEO Sharon Petersen, the dual honours mark a significant milestone for the airline's global standing. The cabin crew uniform, designed by European designers and featuring the airline's signature red colour scheme, incorporates distinctive elements such as bow ties, garrison caps, and plaid patterns, drawing inspiration from youth cadet attire.
Beyond its visual identity, Vietjet emphasises its onboard experience and safety record. Passengers on the Colombo-Ho Chi Minh City route will have access to nine fresh hot meal options, Vikkafe beverages, and duty-free shopping. The airline maintains AirlineRatings' highest seven-star safety rating and has received multiple international commendations from organisations including CAPA, Skytrax, and World Travel Awards for safety, service quality, and brand value.
Vietjet's expansion into Sri Lanka represents the latest phase in the airline's growth trajectory from a regional Vietnamese carrier to an Asia-Pacific network operator with emerging European connections.
