India has become the primary source of international tourism to Sri Lanka this year, with Indian nationals comprising nearly 25% of all visitor arrivals through mid-August, according to official tourism authority data.
India has solidified its position as the leading source of tourists visiting Sri Lanka in 2026, with Indian nationals accounting for approximately one quarter of all international arrivals so far this year. According to the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority, Indian visitors numbered 358,608 out of a total 1,436,926 tourist arrivals recorded through August 13.
The United Kingdom maintained second place in visitor rankings with 140,892 arrivals, while China and Germany followed in third and fourth positions with 94,890 and 83,965 arrivals respectively. This ordering reflects a significant shift in Sri Lanka's tourism composition, with South Asian visitors now substantially outnumbering those from traditional Western markets.
Indian dominance in tourist flows appears particularly pronounced during August, the data shows. Of the 93,511 visitors who arrived during the first 13 days of August, 20,378 were Indian nationals. During the same period, the United States recorded the second-highest arrivals with 10,491 tourists, followed by France with 7,198 and China with 6,383. Tourist arrivals showed relatively steady patterns throughout early August, with 49,759 visitors arriving during the first week and 43,752 during the initial six days of the second week.
