The Deputy Minister of Labour, Mahinda Jayasinghe, announced the formation of a 17-member committee tasked with reviewing and amending the country's labour legislation. According to the Deputy Minister, the committee will be chaired by the Secretary to the Ministry of Labour.

The Ministry has already prepared several preliminary draft proposals, which have been distributed to trade unions represented on the National Labour Advisory Council. This step precedes what officials expect will be comprehensive discussions between the committee and labour representatives regarding potential reforms to the existing legal framework.

The initiative appears designed to facilitate dialogue between government authorities and organised labour before finalizing any legislative changes. By engaging trade unions early in the process, the Ministry aims to ensure that worker concerns and industry perspectives are incorporated into the amendment process. The timeline for completing the review and implementing any resulting changes has not yet been disclosed.
