An eight-year-old girl has died following a road accident on the Ragama-Kandana road after a waste lorry lost control near a railway crossing and collided with multiple vehicles.

A fatal road accident occurred on August 22 near the Walpola railway crossing on the Ragama-Kandana road, resulting in the death of an eight-year-old girl. According to police, a waste-transporting lorry travelling from the direction of Walpola Temple towards the railway station went out of control while safety gates at the railway crossing were closed, leading to a chain-reaction collision.

The uncontrolled lorry struck two cars and another lorry that were stationary near the railway crossing. Additionally, a mother and two children from the same family who were walking along the roadside were caught up in the incident and sustained injuries.

The injured family members were transported to Ragama Hospital, where the eight-year-old girl subsequently died from her injuries while undergoing treatment. Police arrested the driver of one of the lorries involved in the accident. The driver of the waste-transporting lorry was admitted to the same hospital after experiencing a medical emergency.

Ragama Police have launched an investigation into the circumstances of the accident. The exact cause of the lorry's loss of control remains under examination.
