The International Cricket Council has handed down disciplinary action against Indian batter Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sri Lankan fast bowler Asitha Fernando following a heated exchange during the second Test between the two nations at the SSC Grounds in Colombo. Both players were fined 25 percent of their match fees and received one demerit point each for breaching Article 2.12 of the ICC Code of Conduct, which prohibits inappropriate physical contact during international matches.
The incident took place during the 17th over of India's first innings immediately after Fernando had dismissed Jaiswal. According to the ICC's account, Jaiswal approached Fernando and the players engaged in a verbal exchange. Fernando then moved his head toward Jaiswal, with the Indian batter leaning in as well, resulting in their heads making contact.
Both players accepted responsibility for the breach and agreed to the sanctions proposed by ICC Elite Panel Match Referee Andy Pycroft, eliminating the need for formal hearings. Neither player had committed any previous offences in the 24 months prior to this incident, according to the ICC's records.
