The Consumer Affairs Authority conducted a raid on an unlicensed canned fish manufacturing facility in Pannala's Alabadagama area, seizing approximately Rs. 1.5 million worth of products that were being supplied to major supermarket chains.
The Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) executed a raid on a canned fish production facility operating without proper licensing from the Sri Lanka Standards Institution (SLSI) in the Alabadagama locality of Pannala. Acting on information received, the Authority's Competition Promotion Division carried out the operation on the 7th of the month, resulting in the seizure of canned fish stock valued at roughly Rs. 1.5 million.
Investigations at the site revealed that the facility had been supplying its manufactured products to major supermarket chains across the country for retail distribution. The operation uncovered several regulatory violations at the unlicensed establishment, including the absence of manufacturing date markings on the canned fish products.
The CAA has indicated that legal proceedings will be initiated against those responsible for the facility. The charges are expected to include manufacturing canned fish without proper date labelling, as well as the unauthorized storage, sale, and distribution of the products. The suspects and the confiscated stock of canned fish are scheduled to be brought before the Kuliyapitiya Magistrate's Court to face the allegations.
