Beijing hosted a significant moment in robotics competition as the humanoid robot Tian Jiao set a new benchmark for the 100-metre sprint during the closing day of the World Humanoid Robot Games. The machine completed the distance in 8.64 seconds, substantially faster than the longstanding human world record of 9.58 seconds established by Usain Bolt in Berlin during 2009.
This latest achievement marks Tian Jiao's second record-breaking performance in consecutive days of competition. During the semi-final rounds, the robot had already impressed observers by running 100 metres in 8.86 seconds. The improved time in the final represents a reduction of 0.22 seconds, demonstrating further refinement in the machine's performance capabilities.
The margin between Tian Jiao's time and Bolt's record—nearly one full second—highlights the emerging capabilities of humanoid robotics in athletic tasks. While such robotic achievements are notable from a technological standpoint, they operate within a separate competitive category from human athletics, where different physical principles and engineering parameters apply.
