The Colombo Marathon 2026 has earned official certification from international athletics bodies, clearing the way for elite competitors to pursue qualifying standards alongside recreational participants in the September event.
The Colombo Marathon 2026 has obtained formal certification from the Association of International Marathons and Distance Races (AIMS) and received approval from World Athletics, establishing it as an officially recognised international event. The certification verifies that the race course meets international standards, enabling elite athletes to achieve recognised qualifying performances at the competition.
Scheduled for September 13, the marathon will commence at 6 a.m. from Baladaksha Mawatha in Colombo. The event will accommodate runners of varying abilities through four distance categories: the full 42-kilometre marathon, a half-marathon at 21 kilometres, and shorter routes of 10 and 5 kilometres. According to organisers, the race aims to unite both domestic and international participants under the theme "Steps for Peace and Humanity."
Prospective runners interested in competing must complete their registration by September 1, with organisers emphasising that available places are limited. Registration can be completed through the official event website at www.colombomarathon.lk. The international certification and World Athletics approval represent significant developments for Sri Lanka's running community, positioning the marathon as a venue where serious athletes can pursue competitive goals while the event remains accessible to recreational participants.
