Former WWE wrestler and actor Dave Bautista has been confirmed to play the lead role of Kratos in the God of War TV adaptation for Prime Video, replacing Ryan Hurst who departed due to injury.
Dave Bautista has secured the starring role of Kratos in the forthcoming God of War television series, taking over from Ryan Hurst who was forced to leave the production due to health issues. The 57-year-old actor confirmed his casting through an Instagram post featuring the iconic character. According to reports, production will begin anew later this year following the change in lead actors.
The God of War franchise has maintained a significant following since the original PlayStation 2 release in 2005, building a devoted fanbase through its combination of mythological storytelling and intense combat sequences. The early television adaptation had initially drawn inspiration from ancient Greek mythology before shifting focus to Norse mythology in later game iterations. Prime Video's series will follow the narrative arc of the most recent games, chronicling Kratos and his son Atreus as they undertake a journey to scatter the ashes of Kratos's deceased wife, while exploring themes of fatherhood and personal transformation between the two characters.
Bautista, who retired from professional wrestling in 2019 after a two-decade career as a prominent WWE figure, has successfully transitioned into acting. His recent filmography includes appearances in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Drax, alongside roles in Denis Villeneuve's Dune films, the James Bond movie Spectre, and various other theatrical releases including Army of the Dead and Glass Onion.
