The Disaster Management Centre has warned of potentially rising water levels in the Agra Oya river following the opening of spillway gates at Ambewela Reservoir in response to heavy rainfall.
The Disaster Management Centre (DMC) has issued a public warning regarding increased water levels expected in the Agra Oya following operational measures taken at the Ambewela Reservoir. Heavy rainfall in the area prompted authorities to open both spillway gates of the reservoir as a flood management precaution.
According to the DMC, each of the two spill gates has been opened by four feet to allow the controlled release of excess water accumulating in the reservoir. This action is standard protocol during periods of heavy precipitation when reservoir capacity risks being exceeded.
The warning comes as part of ongoing efforts by disaster management authorities to monitor water levels and inform residents in potentially affected areas. Residents living near the Agra Oya are advised to remain alert and take necessary precautions as water flow in the river is expected to increase.
