A private bus carrying 18 passengers veered off a mountainous road and plunged onto a lower roadway in Chamba district, Himachal Pradesh, on Saturday, killing at least eight people and leaving ten others injured. The accident occurred approximately 393 kilometers north of Shimla, the state capital, on a treacherous stretch of road. Authorities have not yet determined the exact cause of the incident, with investigations ongoing.
The accident adds to a troubling safety record in the region during the current monsoon season. According to the State Emergency Operation Centre, 143 people have died in Himachal Pradesh since monsoon conditions began on June 30. Of these fatalities, 65 resulted from rain-related incidents while 78 occurred in road accidents.
Monsoon rains have created widespread disruptions across the state, with 185 roads currently closed due to weather conditions. The combination of heavy precipitation and challenging terrain has made travel particularly hazardous for commuters and commercial transport operators in the mountainous region.
